Research abstract

THERE IS CONSIDERABLE POLICY INTEREST IN FINDING OUT THE MEDICAL RESOURCE USE AND COST OF AIDS PATIENTS. THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT FOR STATE MEDICAID PROGRAMS THAT ARE FINANCED BY PUBLIC MONIES. MEDICAID DATABASES ARE POTENTIALSOURCES OF THESE DATA BECAUSE AIDS CASES CAN BE IDENTIFIED THROUGH DIAGNOSTIC CODES OR OTHER MEANS, AND THEN ALL THEIR MEDICAID SERVICE USE CAN BE PULLED FROM THE DATA FILES. SUMMARY RECORDS CAN BE CREATED AND A DETAILED ANALYSIS CONDUCTED. THIS PROJECT WILL TEST THE OVERALL FEASIBILITY OF DESIGNING A SYSTEM TO MONITOR AND ANALYZE MEDICAID PROGRAM DATA ON AIDS RESOURCE USES AND COSTS. SPECIFICALLY, IT WILL LOOK FORWARD TO A PHASE II ANALYSIS WHERE THE METHODOLOGY DEVELOPED IN PHASE I WILL BE TESTED IN A STATE MEDICAID PROGRAM TO BE SELECTED IN PHASE II.
