Research abstract
Not Available To communicate vocally in another language it is necessary for a person to be bilingual or to use an interpreter. Recently, a handheld, machine based voice-to-voice phrase translation system (PTS) has been demonstrated. However, there are a number of deficiencies that need to be addressed in order for the PTS to be a viable product which include: reliability and robustness; operation in a noisy environment; ease of use and training; speaker independence; software size and portability; and computer hardware and peripherals. Marine Acoustics, In.c, will team with Dragon Systems, Inc. to develop a concept of operations and preliminary design for a handheld PTS. Drawing upon lessons learned from operational and functional testing and from recent advances in the speech recognizer, the current PTS design functionality will be refined and improved. Concurrently, machine translation and speech recognition technology will be assessed and a concept of operations will be developed for the operationa nd use of the PTS. A preliminary design for a handheld PTS will be developed and used as the basis for the Phase II engineering prototype PTS.
