Research abstract

A large number of small diary farms and hog farms in the US are considering the use of anaerobic digestion for conversion of animal manure into biogas. One difficulty they face is that existing biogas purification technology is too expensive on the scale of biogas production from smaller farms, i.e., ~0.25 MMscfd. The innovation of this Phase I project promises to significantly reduce the capital and operating costs for removal of bulk concentrations of carbon dioxide and other impurities from biogas to make high value methane. This module would significantly improve the economics of distributed waste to energy projects, simultaneously produce fewer emissions, less odors, less ground water pollution, provide sustainable local energy production, and become another revenue stream for small farmers.
