Research abstract
72455S03-I This project will develop low mass photomultipliers for novel satellite-based high energy astrophysics experiments to detect and measure ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. A novel compact ceramic vacuum package will enable true surface mounting of miniature photomultipliers directly onto circuit boards for precise tilting of the detectors and mounting in close proximity to detection electronics. During Phase I, a low temperature co-fired ceramic packaging material will be evaluated for compatibility with an ultra-high-vacuum environment and with the alkali metals used in photocathode processing. Simple photodiodes will be fabricated and used to evaluate the compatibility issues. An eight-stage micromachined dynode amplified tube will be demonstrated. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Potential commercial applications include fiber-optic sensors; optical communications; analytical instruments, including sensors and detectors, for a variety of terrorist weapons of mass destruction; medical instrumentation; and manufacturing equipment.
