Research abstract

72238S03-I To address the need for higher power, higher frequency radio frequency (RF) sources to drive advanced accelerators and colliders, this project will develop an 80-120 MW, 11.424 GHz klystron with a sheet electron beam. The operating voltage for the klystron will be as low as possible, and a gridded electron gun will be used with hybrid/solid state power supplies to minimize the RF system cost. To further reduce costs, periodic permanent magnet (PPM) focusing of the beam will be investigated. Phase I will develop a complete design for the klystron to show feasibility of the concept. The critical elements to be addressed are the electron gun, magnetic focusing, RF cavities, collector, input/output couplers, and the output window. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: The primary market for the technology should be the next generation of high power accelerators and colliders. Such accelerators will require hundreds of klystrons. Accelerators for medical diagnostics and treatment make up an important second market.
