Research abstract

IN PHASE I, AN ARCHITECTURE AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN WAS DEVEL-OPED FOR AN INTEGRATED EXPERT SYSTEM FOR THE STRUCTURAL DE- SIGN PROCESS IN THE AEROSPACE INDUSTRY. A DEMONSTRATION SOFTWARE WAS ALSO DEVELOPED. IN PHASE II, THE DETAILED DEVELOPMENT FOR SUCH AN EXPERT SYSTEM AND ITS COMPONENTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT USING THE ARCHITEC- TURE SO DEVELOPED. THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF THE PHASE II RESEARCHAND DVELOPMENT EFFORT WILL BE THE FOLLOWING . INTEGRATION OF ENGINEERING TOOLS AND DISCIPLINES FOR THE DESIGN PROCESS. . KNOWLEDGE REPRESENTATION FOR MIMICING EXPERTS IN MAKING DECISIONS, INCLUDING ASSEMBLING, ORGANIZING AND RETRIEVING KNOWLEDGE IN ALL PHASE OF DESIGN PROCESS, DISTRIBUTED OVER DIFFERENT DATABASES AND HARDWARE, IN AN EFFICIENT SYSTEM USING A FRAME-BASED SYSTEM. . ABILITY OF SELF-EVALUATION AND LEARNING. . USER INTERFACE MODULARITY AND EASY UPGRADABILITY THE RESULTING SOFTWARE WILL UTILIZE NASA-DEVELOPED SHELL CLIWITH FRAME-BASED MODIFICATIONS, WILL BE DEVELOPED PRIMARILY IN 'C' LANGUAGE, FOR USE ON MICRO-COMPUTERS SUCH AS IBM PS/2MODEL 80 AND COMPAQ DESKPRO.
