Research abstract
The future electron¿ion collider for nuclear physics requires a wide range of collision energies. However, operating a high-energy electron storage ring over a wide energy range imposes significant challenges ¿ i.e., maintaining high luminosity and high electron beam polarization ¿ due to variations in the synchrotron radiation power of the electron storage ring. This project will address these challenges by using innovative super-bending magnets with adjustable synchrotron radiation capacity. In Phase I, a number of super-bending magnet design options, including single magnet and modular magnet approaches, will be investigated and compared for technical simplicity, cost effectiveness, and operational feasibility. An optimal conceptual design will be completed for a model magnet, which will be installed and tested in an operating electron storage ring. In Phase II, further optimization will be performed, and a complete super-bending magnet model will be fabricated and bench-tested. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The super-bending magnets should become one of the major components for future electron-ion colliders of ring-ring version. The innovative magnet design concept and fabrication technologies also could find interest in worldwide accelerator projects for higher energy physics, synchrotron radiation light sources, industry applications, and other magnet devices.
