Research abstract
Develop a new and innovative solution for the Dismounted Infantry (DI) module of the Close Combat Tactical Trainer (CCTT) being developed under the CATT Program which allows the trainee squad leader to interact with a computer generated Semi-Automated Force (SAF) that represents the squad. Innovative speech recognition and synthesis techniques will be customized to allow the trainee to interact with his SAAF squad and the 3D visual display and 2D Planned View Display (PVD). The trainee will be able to interact with the squad using voice commands to the computer and obtain voice responses from the SAF squad in a manner similar to actual interaction in the field. The opportunity provides more realistic training while making it easier for the trainee to be immersed in the display environment. The goal is to provide a low cost computer input/out (I/O) capability to supplement the existing joystick and keyboard and to make the voice I/O the primary means of interacting with the training device. The voice I/O capability should be usable for the DI module in the present voice communications environment and for training with the soon to be fielded soldier's computers which provide automation assistance including voice I/O.
