Research abstract

TO INVESTIGATE THE FEASIBILITY OF ULTRA-HIGH EFFECTIVENESS HEAT EXCHANGERS, WHICH ARE PRIMARILY SUITED FOR ICBM DEEP BASE PROGRAM. THE STUDY WILL INCLUDE DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE AND NOVEL CONCEPTUAL DESIGNS OF AN AIR-TO-WATER HEAT EXCHANGER, AN EVAPORATOR, AND A CONDENSER. FOR THE PURPOSE OF REDUCING ELECTRIC POWER CONSUMPTION DURING EGRESS PERIOD OF THE ICBM DEEP BASE OPERATION, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ULTRA-HIGH EFFECTIVENESS HEAT EXCHANGERS ARE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH ULTRA-HIGH EFFICIENCY HEAT PUMPS. THIS PROPOSAL PROVIDES WAYS TO DEVELOP SUCH HEAT EXCHANGERS THROUGH PHASE I TASKS, IN WHICH WE WILL 1) GATHER INFORMATION ON HIGH EFFECTIVENESS HEAT EXCHANGERS; 2) INVESTIGATE AND EVALUATE SEVERAL CANDIDATE HEAT EXCHANGERS, INCLUDING DIRECT CONTACT HEAT EXCHANGERS AS EVAPORATOR AND HEAT PIPES AS CONDENSERS; AND 3) FINALLY, DEVELOP CONCEPTUAL DESIGNS OF ULTRA-HIGH EFFECTIVENESS HEAT EXCHANGERS. THE GAIN IN THERMAL EFFECTIVENESS IN NOVEL HEAT EXCHANGERS WILL BE QUANTIFIED AND FEASIBILITY OF SUCH HEAT EXCHANGERS WILL BE DETERMINED.
