Research abstract

We will test the feasibility of a compact absolute gravimeter for use in rugged field environments such as ocean floors and the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica. The accuracy of the measurement should be better than 5x10^-7 m/s^2 (10 uGal) in an observing period of 24 hours. Phase I will show the feasibility of a new miniature optical design and fringe detection system. We will demonstrate proof-of-principle for a new miniature long-period seismometer and dropping apparatus. These tests will be carried out by integrating them with our current commercial absolute gravimeter, the FG5. Phase II will concentrate on building the prototype design including temperature control and a small integrated electronics package. This phase will also include extensive laboratory and field tests to prove the instrument in the harsh conditions that are envisioned.
