Research abstract
The pulp and paper industry in the United States is in a state of decline due to overseas competition, rising energy costs, declining virgin fiber access, and limited capital infusion. Over eleven million tons of paper and paperboard products capacity have been closed in the U.S., resulting in a loss of over ten thousand high paying manufacturing jobs. Current production technologies require the use of wet pulp fiber to produce a sheet, which is then formed and dried. This project will demonstrate the commercial viability of a nanoscale coating technology that could produce a sheet with the same strength, while utilizing 30% less energy or material. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The nanoscale coating technology would significantly reduce the energy required to produce paper, while also dramatically expanding the use of recycled fiber. Commercial applications should ensue in all phases of the pulp and paper business, including coated freesheet, tissue, folding cartonboards, and corrugated boxes.
