Research abstract

Distance learning is rapidly becoming a key component in training tomorrow's soldiers, sailors, and aircrews. Among the new training techniques is the use of vignettes that pose realistic scenarios to which trainees must respond, enabling intense focus onspecific learning points and the sharing of expertise across trainees. Combining low-fidelity production with high-cognitive-fidelity content, vignettes are filling the gaming niche between procedural training and full-scale simulations. But experience indeveloping online vignettes is a rare commodity, particularly within the military. A vignette development tool to aid training developers in creating high-quality, online vignettes is needed to support the many challenging aspects of the developmentprocess. This proposed Phase II effort will expand and refine the Vignette Development Process designed in Phase I, develop a process for vignette-specific knowledge elicitation, and build the Vignette Development Tool (VDT). Functions of the VDT willinclude a Knowledge Elicitation Process Module, a repository/database to store vignette
