Research abstract

Not Available A directional underwater transducer is proposed to improve the performance of wireless underwater acoustic modems and data networks. Conservation of power is a central requirement of battery-operated wireless modems and instrument networks. The proposed transducer employs spatial diversity to decrease unnecessary modem wake-up cycling and thereby conserves modem power, to conserve transmitter power, and to improve data throughput balancing among the network nodes. The transduction efficiency of 1-3 piezocomposite will serve to further conserve transmitter power andimprove modem endurance. Simplicity of transducer design and construction is a key feature of thedesign to realize low cost fabrication.
