Research abstract
The overall obiective of this Phase I SIBIR is to investigate the feasibility and conduct a breadboard demonstration of a state-of-the-art Precsion Target Ballistic Scoring System capable of scoring both subsonic and supersonic projectiles or particles in sizes from the 0.22 caliber to 120 mm singly or in bursts. The Phase I effort will develop the conceptual top level design of a projectile scoring system using solid-state laser diode and silicon photodetector technology to score the impact x and y coordinate location of large projectiles (l20 mm) to an accuracy of 0.050 inches and smaller projectiles to a greater accuracy on a 25 foot square target. The scoring sensor and data processing subsystem will be able to score typcial burst rates exceeding 675 rounds per minute for the 30mw and greater than 100 rounds per minute for the l20 mm projectile. The capability to derive yaw, tumble, angle of arrival and projectile velocity will be included in the hardware and software design of the signal and data processing system. The datalink design and data transmission rates will allow the processing display of data at locations up to 5 km from the scoring sensor in less than two minutes after 100 round bursts. This effort will develop the design and component parameters required to produce precision ballistic data (x-y impact, angle of arrival, velocity, yaw and tumble) projectiles of sizes from 0.22 caliber to 12mm impacting a 25 foot square target. The scoring system will provide a unique capability for ballistic testing. Technologies being advanced in solid state laser radar detection will have widespread applications in the private sector in collision avoidance radars for advanced highway development.
