Research abstract

"The primary objective of Phase I is to develop a hybrid copolymer dielectric material based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) in a solid-solution combination with polypropylene that provides excellent insulator properties in an intrinsic cell design thatdelivers at least 45 J/cc and a demonstration of its feasibility in an initial prototype cell that delivers at least 10 J/cc at a projected cost per unit performance well below present cost. This hybrid polymer chemically stabilizes the high activity ofPVDF and improves the electrical properties of PVDF resulting in a material with considerably improved energy density and electrical stability. Our objective will be to demonstrate the performance of this material in thin film form and to developmanufacturing procedures, specifically extrusion and biaxial orientation, for fabricating large area, thin films materials that can be metallized and wound into full-size film capacitors. The results of this development will be a new hybrid polymerdielectric that demonstrates increased performance values, including, higher energy density, lower dissipation factor, higher insulation resistance, higher breakdown voltage, high rep rate properties, improved reliability, higher temperature stability, andhigher piezoelectric activity in finished products. Maximizing the energy density, improving its electrical stability and lowering the cost per unit of energy will open up a commercial market of this
