Research abstract

We propose to build a portable sensor for "non-invasive" and "real time" analysis of vital human fluids. This sensor will be based on a CCD-OMA enhance Raman spectromenter employing two novel modulation techniques. Unlike any other techniques, Raman spectroscopy offers the advantage of detecting a large number of chemicals simultaneously and, with the proper selection of the laser excitation wavelength, the ability to pernetrate the human skin and obtain information about the blood chemicals non-invasively. For the analysis of blood chemical profiles, non-invasive detection and data analysis will be performed, while for the analysis of other body fluids, real time detection and data analysis will be carried out. This sensor will be extremely valuable for field trauma and trauma resuscitation monitoring as well as civilian applications. Anticipated Military Benefit/Potential Commercial Applications of the Research or Development: Non-invasive, real time and field usable trauma and trauma resuscitation monitoring; suitable for non-invasive and real time analysis of vital human fluids for civilian applications, suitable for environmental pollutant detection in water.
