Research abstract

Not Available The Global Information Base (GIB) is a broad project that offers opportunities for specific components to be commercialized. Among other attributes, the GIB is expected to store Global Awareness information and provide information services to Dynamic Planning and Execution operations. We focus on a critical element, namely, the ability to traverse a huge repository of data with an eye on select events of interest. We believe that the problem of retrieving information related to interesting events has received some attention, but event detection itself has mostly been side-stepped. Our objective is to demonstrate KARNEC (Knowledge-Aided Retrieval in Activity Context) - an event-detection and retrieval mechanism based on our past successes. We intend to build on our experience with Associate Systems, a preliminary architecture for the GIB, and automated retrieval. We start with the preliminary architecture for the GIB, developed by Dasigi and O'Neil, and integrate event detection and information retrieval components into it. Part of this task will be automated and part will be supported by an associate system. The preliminary demonstration will be based on Plan and Goal Graphs, Latent Semantic Indexing, and Concept Graphs, but in Phase II we will incorporate additional learning into it, as appropriate.
