Research abstract

The proposal is for completion of conceptual design, user testing of prototype, and evaluation of technical performance requirements for a CD ROM/web based product designed to enhance the chances of success of students placed at risk of Educational Failure. "At-risk¿' students are defined not only as students who face barriers related to race, income level, family structure and/or language ability, but also students who are at risk because of the following behavioral patterns: ? aggressive and annoying social behavior with peers ? tendency to rush into things ? negative and defiant behavior ? high levels of attention seeking behavior ? low levels of guilt feelings ? self-centered verbal responsiveness, exemplified by Interrupting others, blurting out thoughts and talk which is Irrelevant to ongoing conversation. (Sivak & Cianci; 1987) The product focuses on 7 key social-emotional skills: empathy, assertiveness, decision-making impulse control, management of feelings, belonging skills (including group participation and asking for help) and self-knowledge, leading to self-esteem. The multimedia capability of digital technology allows multi-sensory learning materials to appeal to a variety of intelligence, using a range of innovative, inter-active activities. Hyperlink structure allows for design that allows access by a variety of Interest areas and learning styles.
