Research abstract

Not Available Significant advances have been made in the development of health monitoring and control algorithms that identify unmodeled dynamics and compensate for many classes of system failures. Yet, there is a general reluctance on the part of industry to employ these techniques in safety-critical production applications. Although many valid reasons exist, a primary source of resistance is the requirement that industry end-users abandon familiar design and certification practices to achieve safety and performance benefits for flight conditions that are rarely encountered (e.g., failures). The proposed work addresses many of the challenges associated with retrofitting existing flight control systems to provide engineers with an ability to compensate for airframe damage, sensor and actuator failures, effector impairments, and dangerous unmodeled dynamics. The approach leverages recent algorithmic advances in system identification, statistical change detection, and model validation to yield a simple (from the user's perspective) add-on system module that provides adaptation to the baseline controller only during a failure. To fully exploit the opportunity, a prototype software tool is envisioned that will allow automated development of custom add-on reconfiguration modules.
