Research abstract
The objective of Phase II is to develop prototype wireless Smart Bearing sensor systems in cooperation with a bearing manufacturer. The sensor is to be a low-cost component, integrated directly with a bearing. The sensor system is to be intelligent andcompatible with IEEE Std 1451. This will provide an open published standard for integration of this intelligent system with any diagnostic system (e.g. ICAS). Thus, the sensor system will be a value-added adjunct to an otherwise standard bearing.Prognostic algorithms, that are characteristic of the application, will be developed and validated in conjunction with the bearing manufacturer, and predictions of Remaining Useful Life (RUL) will be correlated with results of bearing tests-to-failure.Other required developments include packaging of the sensor microelectronics, and algorithm and software integration. Load sensor prototypes will be manufactured in low volume. Documentation for the wireless sensor system prototypes also will be producedin Phase II. Power harvesting capability also will be integrated. Having this capability will cause the sensor system to be essentially maintenance-free, as well as remove the need for a separate power source, which is not always available. Thecoordinated sensor system electronics, powered by the integral power harvesting module, will be demonstrated as part of this contract.
