Research abstract

The Tactus Immersive Learning Environment (TILE) is a cost-effective virtual reality (VR) platform that will enable students to participate in simulations tied to core National Science Education Standards. TILE is for use as a supplement to K-12 science curricula, for primary instruction of concepts or for review, for individual or small-group practice. Because TILE will provide real time graphical representations and summaries of students’ actions and the resulting changes due to their actions, the VR environment will “bring to life” students’ learning of key science concepts. An example of how TILE might be used when learning about forces and motions might involve: students driving race cars and then stopping them to learn about inertia, students dropping items of various masses on the Earth and the moon to observe the varying effects of gravity, or students navigating a freight train to demonstrate resistance.
