Research abstract

Technology is needed for control of emissions of volatile organic compounds(VOC's) and toxic air pollutants (TAP's) from stationary sources. A particularneed exists for emissions control of industrial processes, where diluteconcentrations of VOC's are present in high flows of offgas which may alsocontain submicron particles. The proposed research project is to establish the technical and economicfeasibility of an Adsorption-Integrated-Reduction (AIR) technology, providing asystem to destroy VOC's and/or volatile TAP's in this dilute phase, high flowrate application. To accomplish this research objective, the AIR pollutioncontrol technology employs a new, multicomponent photocatalytic adsorbent, whichis shown to be orders of magnitude more active than traditional titaniaphotocatalysts for dilute concentrations of contaminants in air. The researchprogram will utilize studies of destruction efficiency on representative classesof VOC's, studies of the preferred catalyst configuration for this applications, and a comparative cost analysis of the AIR technology relative to otheralternatives. It is anticipated that an effective dilute phase pollution controlconcept will be demonstrated, which will proved a cost-effective technology fordestroying VOC's in high volume, dilute concentration offgases, with possibleparticulate presence.
