Research abstract

70244 The accelerator magnets for linear colliders must be precisely positioned. Over the course of a 10 km accelerator beam line, small movement of the magnets (on a micron and nanometer level) can cause enough misalignment to affect the likelihood of beam collision. This project will develop a three-dimensional positioning system using high precision, high force stepping motors in a Stewart¿s Platform arrangement, in which the motors will precisely position the magnet throughout its six degrees of freedom. Phase I will develop a prototype motor and develop a conceptual design for the six-motor Stewart¿s Platform and control scheme. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Precise three-dimesional positioning is a problem faced in many different industries. The high accuracy, high force capability should be useful in such markets as semiconductor equipment and adaptive optics.
