Research abstract

Not Available Current Band IV DIRCM laser sources suffer disadvantages such as excessive size and weight, limited duty cycle, low output power and the need for an operational warm up time. These disadvantages make it difficult to utilize these sources on space-limited combat aircraft. Conseequently, compact, MWIR laser sources that can operate with high electrical efficiency at elevated temperature are needed for next-generation spoof-and-jam systems. Coherent Technologies, Inc. proposes an innovative solution to this problem that leverages recent advances in laser and nonlinear optics technology. In Phase I, Coherent Technologies, Inc. will demonstrate a room-tmperature, multi-watt cw MWIR laser transmitter that operates with high electrical efficiency. A growth path towards an extremely compact system that can operate at elevated temperatures will be provided. In Phase II a prototype waveform-agile, Band IV transmitter that can be integrated with an existing CM system will be constructed and tested. This effort will leverage multiple successful CTI demonstrations of on-time, on budget, turn-key, flight-qualified electro-optics systems. This combined Phase I/II effort will provide the Navy with a low-risk, near-term route towards a substantial improvement in DIRCM technology.
