Research abstract

This Phase 2 SBIR proposal presents an architecture for wireless microsensor networks that provides improved information assurance (IA). It addresses both traditional computer network security threats (e.g., eavesdropping, masquerade and forgery) and alsomicrosensor-centric IA threats such as denial-of-service attacks, battery exhaustion, sensor tampering/spoofing, and adversarial movement of sensors. It also covers other important IA issues such as network reliability, network availability, long-termmaintainability, and the integration with the DoD's strategic backbones and tactical Intranets. Finally, SRC's modular open system architecture is based on industry standards, uses common hardware and software, and also provides a dynamically-configurablemicrosensor network with improved information assurance that can continuously evolve as new technologies emerge. The ability of multimode sensors (or collections of single-mode sensors) to detect adversarial movement/spoofing of the deployed microsensorsis a key technology that will be demonstrated during this proposed Phase 2 effort.
