Research abstract

In the field of seismic event identification, three spatial dimensions and one time dimension are almost always coupled together. This may create confusion in data perception and interpretation. A novel multi-D display device wchih can improve data visualization is needed. The object of this project is to develop a Volumetric Image Display (VID) capable of displaying multi-D volumetric images in a spatial region. Viewers can walk around the image and view at different anlges without wearing any kind of glasses. Two approaches, rotating screen display and reciprocating screen display, are proposed to achieve this goal. In this project, the feasibility of the VID devices will be demonstrated and their performance potential will be evaluated. Anticipated Benefits: The VID can be applied for the discrimination of different types of seismic events and for visualizing other mutlidimensional data problems. Additionally, VID can find its market in many other commercial fields such as the computer, the video game, and the future HDTV industries. With this VID moniotr, a great impact on computer and consumer electronic industry can be expected.
