Research abstract

Quiet, compact and low cost power and environmental control systems are needed for command and control shelters. Altex has identified the Altex Compact Trigeneration System (ACTS) concept that uses a novel power source that can quietly power, and cool orheat shelters. In addition, the system has a smaller footprint, less emissions and lower operating costs than existing diesel generators and cooling systems. Under the proposed Phase II effort, Altex and Florida Turbine Technologies Inc., will worktogether to build a full scale ACTS prototype and field test the unit in a Lightweight Multipurpose Shelter. As part of this effort, system process conditions and designs will be prepared. Also, system components will be fabricated and assembled. Theprototype unit will first be tested at Altex, ahead of installing and testing the unit in the field. At the conclusion of the effort, detailed drawings will be prepared along with a final report that documents all project results. A successful ACTSdemonstration will result in the availability of a military trigeneration system that will support the power and heating or cooling needs of command and control shelters. Besides reducing power and cooling costs, system weight, size and fuel consumption,ACTS will reduce noise and emissions that make current systems problematic. In addition, these systems can be commercially used to provide power, and heating or cooling in off the grid type applications. These applications might be as extensive asmilitary applications, resulting in the production of over 100,000 units. The fuel use reductions for these units would be worth $70 million/year.
