Research abstract

Mobility and Survivability for Command Posts (CPs) is a signature challenge for the Unified Network priority in the Army Modernization Strategy. As demand for power increases, generators based on traditional piston engines are big and heavy, requiring a towed trailer, reducing mobility and increasing signature. The challenge of integrating auxiliary power into a mobile CP has been highlighted as a primary concern by Network CFT project managers. LiquidPiston Inc (LPI) has developed an advanced, heavy-fueled rotary “X-Engine”, integrated into an ultra compact and lightweight generator. In this effort, LPI will adapt and qualify its generator technology specifically for the mobile and survivable command post application. This will include modifying the generator to provide onboard vehicle power “on the move. The program involves extensive ruggedization, testing and qualification to increase and validate the technical maturity of the technology, leading to a fieldable APU solution for CP.
