Research abstract

More Electric Engines (MEEs) are under development for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and other applications. Trade studies have shown that the elimination of the oil lubrication system increases the engine performance, reduces the system weight, improvesreliability, and reduces maintenance costs. This research program addresses the development of a low cost, high performance magnetic bearing system for a UAV propulsion engine. In Phase I, key features of a novel distributed controller were demonstrated. In Phase II, a complete magnetic bearing system will be demonstrated at conditions prototypical for a MEE used in a UAV.
