Research abstract
"Cost is the main factor that prevents Photovoltaics (PV) from widespread use. One way to lower costs and compete with
conventional energy sources is to improve upon the operating performance of the PV module or solar thermal collector.
There are many factors that can adversely affect performance such as the accumulation of dust. Studies have shown that
soiling of a PV module can reduce output by 20% or more. Also, regardless of the PV technology used, the PV module is
protected from the elements by a transparent cover sheet. Additional losses occur from light reflection from this cover.
Solar thermal collectors are impacted in a similar fashion. An anti-soiling/anti-reflection concept to address these
problems is especially relevant for farms and rural areas needing electricity who are off the grid and where there is
significant wind dust.
This Phase I effort will determine the feasibility of developing an anti-soiling and/or anti-reflecting film for use in PV and
solar thermal and their application by pyrolytic spraying techniques. Both films consist of metal oxides with the antisoiling
a photo-catalyst semiconductor and the anti-reflective composed of transparent semiconductors. Work on the
deposition of the films is integral to the project."
