Research abstract
This program is directed at the development of variable inductors. These inductors have a low impedance under normal condictions but the impedance increases when the current flowing though it exceeds a threshold value. These variable-impedance inductors have application to over current protection, fault current limiting, increasing power quality in power distribution systems, reducing motor starting transients, and enhancing the performance of electromagnetic filters. The basis of this behavior is novel magnetic materials unique magnetic characteristics. The magnetic materials used not commercially available but have been fabricated and characterized in small, single-crystal samples. The company will jointly research fabrication processes with Ames Laboratory and then scale up these processes internally to manufacture and commercialize the inductors. Power electronics systems are increasingly used to control the flow and distribution of electrical power. These systems would benefit from a reliable passive surge suppression system. Utilities would also benefit from protective devices that limited the extent of blackouts and reduce damage from excessive currents.
