Research abstract
75266-Small wireless sensors can be used to better monitor and control industrial processes, generators, and buildings, lowering energy consumption and improving failure tolerance. However, the sensors need reliable and long-lasting power sources to enable autonomous operation for long times. This project will develop and demonstrate new micro-sized thermoelectric converters that harvest electrical energy from small temperature differentials. The technology is based on recent advances in materials, thermoelectric converters, and electrochemical deposition methods that will allow the fabrication of lower cost thermoelectric converter sheets. In Phase I, the available temperature differentials and capacities of typical surfaces of interest will be determined. Materials will be selected, and microstructured conformal prototype sheets will be fabricated and tested. The microstructures will be combined with a remote wireless sensor and demonstrated. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Small autonomous wireless sensors could be distributed throughout buildings to better monitor heating and cooling to improve energy efficiency. The sensors could also be used to monitor combustion engines and other power generators for better control and higher efficiency. Medical, surveillance, and homeland security applications also could benefit from the technology.
