Research abstract
The specific aim of this project is to design, develop and test a comprehensive data system regardisubstances in household consumer products. It will include a file on hazardous substances in consumethe toxicological effects of these substances; a file on alternatives to the products which containconsumer survey and file regarding the use and disposal of these substances; a model of consumer expsubstances in the home; and a consumer use model. The system will be designed to provide rapid and eaccess to data on the health effects of consumer products; the identification of hazardous substanceinformation on alternatives and their effectiveness; statistics on consumer use, attitudes and dispoon the health effects of these products on consumers; and predictions of the effects of changing congoals of Phase I are to develop a survey instrument, conduct a pilot survey with that instrument, sedevelop the first generation data files, test the feasibility of the files with about 100 records pedevelop the first generation models for consumer exposure and consumer use, and test the feasibilitysample data. Background information is given which shows with striking clarity the extent of the proutility of the system described. Household hazardous substances are a very substantial problem, littconsumers. Their storage and use are often not properly done; their disposal is often even worse. Spthe Garbage Project at the University of Arizona-Tucson is given.
