Research abstract

We will use a voice activated multimedia simulation model to develop a unique method ofindependent learning and self-evaluation. The method will allow clinicians to learn the algorithms fordepression diagnosis and management by interviewing simulated video patients with symptoms ofdepression, using natural spoken language. The model will include a unique computer-based,nondirective teaching algorithm which will provide individualized guidance and performance feedbackto the user during the simulation. In Phase I, prototype patient simulations will be developed and fieldtested in primary care training programs to determine the feasibility of the method. In Phase II, acomprehensive library of depression case studies will be created and tested to determine the educationaleffectiveness of the model and the impact on the clinical performance of primary care providers.
