Research abstract

In this Applied/Exploratory Development program we will determine feasibility of the use of a new CCD driver concept for matrix addressed field emitter array (FEA) displays which has been under development at the Rochester Institute of Technology. This new serial driver concept, with its unique gray level storage and transfer capability, provides the opportunity for a low cost, low spatial volume, low energy consumption, and high resolution video display or optical printer array when combined with FED Corporation's high performance FEA technology. RIT will provide linear CCD array chips to this project compatible with field emitter devices, and some chips containing field emitter arrays. FED Corporation will experimentally optimize and characterize the new CCD-FEA chips. FED Corporation and RIT will develop a Phase II design for a high-definition head mounted display light source array suitable for scanning display applications using the data gathered in Phase I. Anticipated Benefits: Future applications include use in high definition digital photography, high resolution printed and active graphics, small to large area flat-panel portable video displays, simulated environmental systems, and virtual reality.
