Research abstract

"An engineering analysis tool for fast and accurate calculations of the aerodynamicand aerothermodynamic characteristics of multistage rocket sled vehicles at subsonicthrough hypersonic Mach numbers is proposed. The Phase I feasibility study willevaluate the use of component buildup methods which couple experimental data withanalytical techniques to predict these characteristics including effects of theground plane and reflected shock waves. In addition, the use of an integratedanalysis system to support the engineering estimates is proposed. This systemconsists of a number of related databases containing alternate analysis methods, design rules, test requirements, experimental and computational data, historicaldocuments, and lessons learned. The system provides easy access to the corporatememory from previous test programs so that the mistakes, successes, and experiencesfrom the past are available to improve future programs. The method helps lessexperienced engineers to accomplish accurate aerodynamic analyses for future rocketsled tests with a guide to remind them of the legacy of previous tests. Theengineering tool will increase the accuracy and speed of the aerodynamic analysisprocess for rocket sleds, reduce the required design margins for the rocket sledvehicle, and ultimately reduce the risk and cost of future rocket sled tests. The engineering analysis tool will have application at other rocket sled testfacilities, ballis
