Research abstract

Solid Free Forming of monolith and uniform discrete reinforced materials has been demonstrated by fused deposition of heavily loaded slurries. In this program we will extend the fused deposition process to functional gradient material. The composition of material deposited will be controlled by the flow rates of two individual materials that are mixed in a low dead volume head. Thus, it will be possible to continuously vary the composition across the body. In the Phase I we will demonstrate the production and sintering of metal to ceramic FGMs and polymer to metal FGM'S. Anticipated Benefits: This program will develop a technique for the free forming of functional gradient materials. This technique will find use for production of components of use in defense and energy applications such as turbine rotors and radiant burners.
