Research abstract

During Phase I CFD Research and Charged Injection Corporation demonstrated Electrostatic Atomization (EA) is capable of reducing fuel pressurization requirements while simultaneously improving cylinder combustion processes. This technology is now matureenough to improve the fuel consumption of today's U.S. Army Compression Ignition (CI) engines up to five percent as a result of reducing fuel pump parasitic looses. The electrostatic fuel conditioning effects produce, a significant improvement in fuelatomizaiton and reaction kinetics, which results in lower gaseous and particulate emissions. Phase II EA insertion into a Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC) CI engine technology insertion will focus on:a) Design, fabrication and atomization testing of an electrostatic diesel fuel injector engine set scaled from the successful Phase I prototype.b) Precision in cylinder test and evaluation of production versus electrostatic injector sets within single and multi cylinder University of Michigan CI research engines.c) Assembly of an electrostatic fuel injection retrofit kit from the research test hardware.d) Field evaluation of the retrofit kit at an approved Army overhaul installation site.To achieve these goals CFD Research has teamed with Charged Injection Corporation, the University of Michigan and Detroit Diesel Corporation to assure all key elements necessary for program success are present from contract award. CFDRC's mature workingrelationships with these and other companies assures a successful transition from Phase II to Phase III.
