Research abstract
The principal goal of the Phase I program is to demonstrate the feasibility of predicting the likelihood of injury by developing an injury-predicting criterion for one segment of the human body. The Phase I effort will concentrate on identifying relevant neck-related injuries, determining loads and accelerations related to neck injuries, developing and validating a comprehensive injury criterion for the human neck, and finally, demonstrating the capability to assess neck injury likelihood. The procedure identified in Phase I to develop the neck injury criterion will be documented in a final report. The result of the Phase I effort will serve as the basis for designing and implementing instrumentation and hardware for an injury assessment manikin neck, developing similar injury criteria for additional body segments, and subsequently developing a computer simulation model for injury likelihood assessment. The culmination of the Phase I and subsequent program efforts will be the capability to predict the likelihood of aircraft-related injuries through the use of an anthropomorphic manikin.
