Research abstract

The proposed research will determne the feasibility of extending the steady and unsteady aerodynamic modeling capabilities of ASTROs using modern nonlinear Computational Fluid Dynamics. The object of Phase I is to explore the technical means by which CFD codes can be efficiently integrated into the ASTROS methodology. Four tasks are proposed. (1) analysis of the functionality of the Aerodynamic Influence Coefficients formulation, including the evaluation of two novel sensitivity alternatives; (2) assessment of performance requirements and operation bounds; (3) assembly of a compendium of ASTROS-compatible CFD technologies; and (4) layout of a detailed system design. The result of the Phase I research will be the construction of a development roadmap for a prototype of an enhanced ASTROS system. Candidate CFD codes suitable for integration into ASTROS in the Phase II effort will also be determined.
