Corrosion control is the main obstacle facing chiller manufacturers for the introduction of new designs of high efficiency lithium bromide (LiBr) machines using high temperature stages. To keep the chiller cost-competitive, the corrosion control method must be cost-effective. Corrosion control using soluble inorganic inhibitor additives to the fluid in combination with relatively low to moderate cost materials of construction is the method most likely to resolve the problem. Several novel inhibitor candidates will be tested for efficacy, along with varying materials and conditions. For Phase I, screening tests will include established electrochemical and weight loss experimental methods at elevated temperature and pressure.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The commercial application is in new designs of high efficiency LiBr absorption chillers using high temperature stages such as triple-effect, and direct-fired double-effect cycles. _
