Research abstract

Modern simulation tools will contribute to increased safety and provide strategic advantage i nthe area of environmental protection for combat vehicle crews, military battlefield installations, such as shelters, hospitals or command and control units, and for mission-critical electronics. An integrated software system is proposed for geometric modeling, unstructured/adaptive grid meshing, flow, heat transfer and pollutant dispersal simulation and on-line visualization/animation. It will be specifically designed for environment simulation inside and around mission critical electronics, battlefield installations and combat vehicle interiors. A state-of-the-art implicit, pressure-based, finite volume, unstructured, mixed element type grids, geometry- and solution-adaptive CFD code will be developed for incompressible flows and for contaminant (NBC) transport/dispersal. In the Phase I effort, a recently developed 3-D unstructured (hybrid) grid pressure based, finite volume, CFD code, CFD-ACE-UN, will be upgraded to a higher level object oriented architecture and by incorporating geometry and solution adaptation capability. It will also be equipped with GUI, grid generator and visualization software modules. The adapted software system will be demonstrated on climate control analysis in selected combat vehicle and shelter tent configurations. In Phase II the software will be enhanced in terms of adaptive remeshing automation and parallel computing.
