Research abstract

The precise performance of sonar sensors provides modern submarines with superior maneuverability and detection capabilities. These sensors are encased in acoustically transparent panels that can be damaged over time. Currently fielded underwater-curing adhesives and filler materials used to repair damaged panels cause acoustic interference with sonar signals, degrading sensor performance and compromising combat readiness. The source of the observed acoustic interference is the mismatch in impedance between the panel material and the adhesive. To address this need, Luna Labs will build upon our experience with underwater-curing materials to develop an adhesive similar in mechanical and acoustic properties to that of panels used on modern vessels. By matching these properties through an understanding of structure-property relationships, both acoustic transparency and long-term adhesion to the target substrate will be demonstrated.Ý
