Research abstract

Not Available Advanced Thermal and Environmental Concepts (ATEC), Inc. in collaboration with Carbon-Carbon Advanced Technologies (C-CAT), Inc. proposes to develop a carbon-carbon composite weight efficient, compact air-to-air heat exchanger for the V-22 application. The development effort takes advantage of a number of innovative technologies unique to ATEC and CCAT. These technologies include, the use of a carbon-carbon high modulus composite material for high temperature application, electrohydrodynamic (EHD) enhancement of the heat exchanger performance, and advanced design structures for producing compact and weight efficient parallel plate counterflow heat exchangers. There are a number of advantages using the proposed design, including: (1) extremely high effectiveness (greater than 90% with EHD and 80% without EHD), (2) high throughput and low pressure drop, (3) high resilience against high temperature degradation and decomposition, (4) simple design and manufacturing process, (5) damage tolerant, and (6) extremely light and compactness. During Phase I, we will further develop the concept presented in this proposal, perform analytical and computational modeling for feasibility study and demonstration of the significant weight and volume reduction advantage and improvements in the specific conductance of the heat exchanger. ATEC/C-CAT team will also show feasibility and prototyping of the proposed manufacturing approach for a single layer heat exchanger. Additionally, we will investigate the feasibility of deposition of a ceramic coating on the internal surfaces to yield higher temperature tolerance and corrosion resistance under hostile V-22 environment. Efforts during Phase I option will be focused on development and testing a multi-layer geometry, which will be adopted for prototype and final product development during Phase II.
