Research abstract

Relational Geometric Synthese (RGS) is a new object-oriented paradigm for 3-D geometric design. In RGS-based design, many qualitative and quantitative relationships between geometric objects are captured in a way that permits automatic update, preserving these relationships, following changes in underlying objects. Other advantages include support of a wide variety of curve and surface types; avoidance of mavy difficulties of surface-surface intersectino and trimming occurring in conventional B-rep solid modeling; extremely compact representaion of models; suitability for PC and workstation platforms. RGS offers similar advantages in generation of panel models representing comples geometries for input to boundary-integral computer codes. We propose to explore, develop and demonstrate panelization capabilitiess through applications and extensions of existing RGS modeler Multi Surf: output of panel files in standard formats; creation and automated panelization of parametrically varied geometries; implementation of new entities fulfilling needs arising in panelization; identification of panel neighbor relations across patch boundaries. Extension to volume gridding for finite element methods is contemplated for Phase II.
