Research abstract

To address the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) need for effective inspection of Enhanced Small Arms Protective Insert (ESAPI) and Lightweight Plate (LWP) hard armor plate systems, Albireo Technologies LLC (ATC) is proposing to continue developing in Phase II a Multi-Modal X-ray Inspection (MAXIS) System with a hybrid X-ray sensor configuration intended to provide optimized detection capabilities for cracks, delaminations, and other types of defects typically occurring in ESAPI and LWP armor plates. During Phase I, ATC developed a tabletop TRL-5 MAXIS prototype and successfully demonstrated its effectiveness in detecting delaminations, cracks, and other defects in both ESAPI and LWP armor plates, as well as the potential for being implemented as a portable, inexpensive, and simple-to-operate solution. In Phase II Base, ATC will develop, test, and demonstrate a TRL-6 system prototype. In Phase II Option, ATC will further develop the MAXIS system to TRL-7 maturity and prepare a plan for small-scale production, so that the fabrication of the 12 units required by the USMC can commence immediately in Phase III.
