Research abstract
Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination plants provide fresh water for the Navy. However, occasional high concentrations of colloidal solids and plankton/small animal matter can virtually disable the RO system from operating. A lightweight self-cleaning filter is proposed for this RO application. Phase I develops a design and demonstrates the feasibility of the concept. Tests are planned that consider a variety of foulants that might be encountered. The design is compatible with shipboard materials, requires no operator interaction, and does not interfere with RO system performance.
