Research abstract

This proposal describes an appproach to developing a very low cost satellite modem providing an economical, useful measure of anti-jam performance for SHF (DSCS) or commercial (C or Ku band) satellite communications. Our proposal presents the top level system issues and outlines a plan for Phase I study areas. It considers the key tradefoffs between AJ protection and system capacity. We also consider management and control issues, especially in the context of current and emerging DSCS network management standards. The proposed approach builds on ViaSat's exceptional experience in managing SBIR Phase I and Phase II programs, and in transitioning those into successful government and commercial Phase III programs, and in transitioning those into successful government and commercial Phase III products. ViaSat engineers pioneered the original Frequency Hop Code Division Multiple Access (FH-CDMA) waveform that evolved into the existing DSCS Universal Model System AJ waveform. ViaSat already sells both government and commercial satellite and terrestrial modems that would benefit from inserting new low cost FH or Pseudo Noise CDMA technology. We have in place an experienced domestic and international satellite marketing executive working full time on commercial satcom to ensure a successful transition to the marketplace.
