Research abstract
Not Available The proposed concept of advanced thermal barrier technology utilizes fullerenes and fullerene-based materials to create effective lightweight and environmentally safe thermal protection coatings on exterior aircraft structures exposed to high temperatures. Based on preliminary results, fullerenes were shown to have extremely low thermal conductivity and high emissivity along with low ablative rates and good ablation cooling properties. During the course of this Phase I project, MER will investigate thermal properties of fullerenes and fullerene-based materials in wider temperature ranges and develop apropriate techniques of applying fullerene coating onto the surface of aircraft components. The optimization of these parameters and procedures will be performed during anticipated Phase I programs.
