Research abstract

40484 Scientific Digital Visions, Inc. A long-standing Department of Energy program, managed by the National Nuclear Data Center (NNDC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory, provides scientists access to its large, online databases. This project will develop a client-server database model that allows a scientist¿s desktop computer to transparently interact with computers at the NNDC via the Internet. Intelligent agents associated with nuclear data applications will issue database queries and process results. A registry system will be constructed to track research interests of scientists, transmitting messages to the appropriate users as new information is entered into the NNDC databases. Software will be prototyped and tested that allows applications developed by the U.S. Nuclear Data Network to directly request access information from these databases. Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications as described by the awardee: Intelligent, autonomous agents that provide highly-efficient message passing and data mining are needed throughout the scientific and engineering community. Popularization of the World Wide Web demonstrates the need to develop these emergent technologies. In addition to the NNDC application, the technology could be used wherever a primary database is stored on a remote server and accessed through a client, e.g., for medical, police, and personnel records.
